20 Years of Skateboarding
in South Central LA

From pioneering skate shop to community cornerstone — Warning Skate Shop has been serving Los Angeles skaters since 2005, bringing quality gear, expert knowledge, and authentic skateboarding culture to South Central and beyond.

Library of Congress Documented

A Cultural Landmark in South Central LA

In 2011, the Library of Congress documented Warning Skate Shop as a significant cultural landmark at the intersection of E. 83rd Street and S. Central Avenue. This recognition placed Warning alongside some of America's most important cultural sites — an acknowledgment that a small, family-owned skate shop in South Central Los Angeles had become something far greater than a retail store.

The documentation recognized Warning as a living piece of American skateboarding heritage — a place where the sport's roots in street culture are preserved and passed on to new generations. In a neighborhood where resources are often scarce and recreational spaces are limited, Warning became a safe haven where young people could discover skateboarding, build community, and find mentorship.

The Library of Congress honor reflects what the community has known for years: Warning Skate Shop is more than commerce. It is a cultural anchor. From hosting informal skate sessions to mentoring first-time riders, from stocking local artists' designs to supporting bilingual families navigating the sport — Warning has woven itself into the fabric of South Central LA life.

Today, that cultural significance continues. Every deck sold, every setup built, and every young skater who walks through the door is part of a story the Library of Congress deemed worthy of preserving for all of America. It's a responsibility we carry with pride and honor every single day.

Our Story

In May 2005, Warning Skate Shop opened its doors at 8228 S Central Ave, becoming the first dedicated skate shop in South Central Los Angeles. What started with modest expectations and low foot traffic has grown into a beloved institution that has served the LA skateboarding community for over two decades.

As an independently owned, family-operated business, we've stayed true to our grassroots mission: providing quality skateboard products, honest advice, and a welcoming space for skaters of all backgrounds and skill levels. We stock our own Warning brand decks, trucks, and wheels alongside trusted names — always at prices the neighborhood can afford.

In 2008, we expanded with a second location near USC at 2676 S Vermont Ave, extending our reach to serve college students and the University Park community. Through economic downturns, urban change, and the challenges that come with running a small business in South Central, we've never closed our doors. That resilience is a testament to the community that supports us and the culture we're proud to be part of.

Our bilingual staff (English and Spanish) reflects the neighborhood we serve. We don't just sell skateboards — we build them, repair them, and help every skater who walks in find the right setup for their style and budget. Whether you're a first-timer or a seasoned pro, you'll get the same honest service and genuine stoke.
